Venison....and a grass-fed diet!
I mentioned before that our good friends gave us a bag of venison from one of their hunts. Did I mention how delightful it's been to have such fresh, lean, natural meat on hand? I would eat venison every night if I could. All of this, but I'm not a hunter. I doubt I could ever do it. I'm seriously considering it, though. We're running low on meat and I even resorted to buying hamburger from the grocery store. We don't have fresh, local, grass-fed options out here either. Yet.
UPDATE: I will never, ever buy ground beef from an unknown source again. After watching Michael Pollan on Oprah the other day, I am now informed that the hamburger on the shelves in grocery stores is meat from 1000-5000 different cows. I had no idea. Talk about not knowing where your meat comes from.
This brings me to my next issue. My husband and I are working on a business plan (it's looking really good, so far) to bring grass-fed meats to our local community. After reading articles like THIS I am reminded how important it is for us to know where our foods are coming from. More on this topic later as our business plan comes together.
I got some organic sweet potatoes (they were little, like fingerlings) in my Bountiful Basket last week. I peeled and chopped them into chunks. Into the slow-cooker they went. Along with a turnip, jalapeno, gray squash, celery, onion and pan-seared, marinated venison. A little barley, and voila! It was delicious and I plan on doing it again. None of my recipes ever turn out the same. Just improved from the time before.

Weird, it wouldn't let me leave a comment in Firefox. I have just a few things I want to mention. Carl and I have a couple different business plans we are working on right now as well. We have seriously thought about opening a co-op, but that I'm afraid is a ways off. I am trying to organize a farmers market in Lehi and I've been thinking about your local beef ideas. It could be as simple as setting a booth up with flyers and info about acquiring home grown meat, something that you would not have to necessarily be here for but would give you some publicity and on opportunity to present your product. I think meat is one of those things that people would be willing to pay a little more for if they could get it in bulk and from a trusted source. We have another plan in the works too, it sort of goes hand in hand with the market but just a little different avenue. I'm getting ready to apply for a business license for our "urban farm". There are many things I intend to offer but in the process I'll be designing a web page that allows people to place orders for plants, seeds, crafts, etc., etc.. I was thinking that it may not be a bad idea to include a page where you and Stu can offer meat, I think it may take some time but could essentialy be a huge hit. If nothing else you guys should let me know if you have thought about a web-page, I have a few resources for putting one all together, including advertising via facebook, twitter, blogger... Just some ideas. I feel like what we are trying to do here and what you are doing there may work well together. Anyways, thought I would throw that out there - I've been meaning to discuss it a little more with you but we just seem to miss each other lately.
ReplyDeleteI hope things are going well, sorry to hear about the government jobs. It's all bull-shit but I still have to believe that one person can make a difference and if we are ernest we can cause change. Good luck with the cut-backs.
